Born in Jacksonville, Florida, and raised in Troy, Ohio, Greg Sherman Jr. was a strong-willed and charismatic young boy. From an early age, he had a tendency to defy authority, challenging boundaries in a relentless pursuit to live beyond the expectations placed upon him. He was a natural advocate for the underdog, identifying more with the overlooked and underestimated than those in positions of power.
In high school, Greg stood up for those without a voice, often intervening when others were bullied. He also attended a machinist trade school for part of the day, where he developed a deep respect for creating something from what seemed like nothing. After graduating from high school, Greg began working in various machine shops, eventually joining his father in the family business.
Seeking purpose and direction, Greg walked into a recruiter's office one day and walked out as a builder in the Seabees—the construction battalion of the United States Navy. When asked why he joined the military, Greg would say he believed every able man should serve his country. As he grew older, he revealed the deeper truth: he joined to get away, to find himself, and to become the truest version of who he was meant to be.
Greg served in South Korea, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, dedicating eight years to the Seabees. During his service, he met his wife and began building a family. Despite the accolades and the pride of his military service, Greg’s greatest achievement was fatherhood. Becoming a father to Savannah and Hunter-Scott Sherman was his proudest milestone and the accomplishment that brought him the most joy.
Even after his time in the military, Greg's strong will persisted. He fought through the mental battles of war that often linger long after service, displaying resilience and determination. Though no biography could fully capture the personal struggles and victories he experienced; Greg achieved a sense of peace and fulfillment that defined his life.
As a civilian, Greg continued to build both his career and his community. He earned a bachelor’s degree in construction management and moved his family back to California, where his wife was from and where he had been stationed during his service. He became an active part of the local community, coaching his son’s Little League teams and eventually joining the Little League board.
As a board member, Greg worked tirelessly to bring about meaningful change. Alongside friends, he rebuilt bleachers and revamped fields, creating a safe and welcoming space for children to play baseball. As a coach, he instilled in young players the values of teamwork, confidence, and respect, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he mentored.
When Greg’s son joined the Reaper Squad, Greg found himself surrounded by a team that reflected the same character and values he held dear. While he wasn’t a coach and remained just a spectator, he eagerly jumped at almost any opportunity to help the team, always striving to support the players and foster a positive environment.
Growing up feeling like an underdog, Greg made a vow as an adult to never stand by and allow anyone to feel that way. He dedicated his free time to his children, using their interests—whether it was his daughter's passion for dance and engineering or his son's love for baseball and video games—as opportunities to build bridges between hobbies and self-confidence. Greg's unwavering commitment to fostering their growth and self-belief was a cornerstone of his legacy as a father.
A true hero shows courage when the odds are stacked against them. Even when friends fail to see the purpose, they find the will to persevere. Greg Sherman Jr. embodied this spirit—the ultimate underdog who never gave up.
